Rocks study

Description

For my October challenge (lutrasilvereye.deviantart.com/… ), part of %SpeedpaintStudies
My first study (which I tried to redo). Didn't get far with both, stopped after ~ 1 hr for each. I was not really in the right mood or settings, things kept going wrong (for one thing this wasn't at home).

Reference in middle: joanielynn.deviantart.com/art/…

►What did you learn from doing this study?
Have everything I want ready, i.e. brushes etc. Its better to do it in an environment where I'm comfortable and not so great on my laptop where I didn't have everything set up the way I usually digipaint.
Try to ignore the textures, start with rough colours and shapes.

►What did you find difficult?
The colours and shadows, getting started.

►What area's do you wish to improve on?
Texture, shadows.

I really agree with you on the importance of having everything set up beforehand.  I even like to take it one step further before even opening up photoshop I study the picture mentally and try to solve certain problems that I figure I'll run into along the way and noting the negative space in order to speed up the process.  Who knows what you could have done during the second hour, next time you should give it a bit more of a chance and, of course, feel comfortable in your environment:-)
